We currently have 9 members. Anyone who is interested in joining us is very welcome!

We meet on the second Tuesday afternoon of each month at 1:45 p.m. in the Lounge from September to June.

The Together We Can Projects for 2017 to 2020 will be The Kenora Fellowship Centre and Haiti: Reducing Gender-based Violence.

Together We Can!

Together with WMS groups, congregations, and mission-minded people We Can make a difference.

Kenora Fellowship Centre

The Kenora Fellowship Centre (KFC) provides sanctuary and hospitality for those marginalized and alienated by poverty and addiction.

The Centre is also known as Anamiewigummig. Anamiewigummig means House of Prayer in Ojibway. It operates as a drop-in centre and offers basic essential services such as food, shelter, showers, clothing, laundry, transportation and various other kinds of support.

Residential schools and their impact on Indigenous people’s lives are a part of our past and present. The schools’ survivors, through their testimonies, speak of fear, shame, loneliness and loss of guidance, culture and love. Most speak of hunger and mandatory physical labour. Many speak of physical and mental abuse.

Generations of Indigenous Peoples have been affected with some of the following results: families and communities are broken apart, drug and alcohol problems are rampant, and suicides and hopelessness are happening all too often. The Kenora Fellowship Centre is working to support those in Kenora dealing with these realities.

KRC’s mission is “to clothe the naked, to help the helpless, to feed the hungry, to love the unloved, to guide the lost.” It does this through many of its programs. It offers transitional housing to approximately 16 men and women. Besides, food and shelter, it runs various support programs such as reconciliation circles, mentoring programs, life skills training, healing and wellness circles, basic administration services, food security gardens and other services as needs become apparent.

A weekly worship service sometimes includes a healing and wellness circle, drumming and the sharing of traditional foods.

Gender-based Violence, Haiti

While women are known as the central pillars of the family and community in Haiti, they are also frequently vulnerable to abuse and violence. Lack of resources, gender power imbalances and widespread poverty severely limit prevention, care and treatment for victims of abuse.

Through this Together We Can! project you can support Presbyterian World Service & Development (PWS&D) as they help vulnerable women and girls and put an end to gender-based violence in Haiti.

Violence against girls and women is a serious health and human rights issue. With support from the WMS and other Presbyterians, PWS&D will help address the root causes of this injustice, meet the needs of victims and reduce the risk of gender-based violence for the long-term.

This program works in collaboration with local organizations to protect the rights of women and girls and ensures that victims have access to the medical, social, legal and economic services they need to cope and combat the injustice of sexual violence.
